Description

A Scottish junior international, Leith, Midlothian born left back Andy Clark began his football career with Hamilton Academical in 1897 and also had spells with Buckhaven United in 1898 and Heart of Midlothian for whom he made 39 appearances over two seasons from from August 1899 before heading south to join First Division Stoke in the close season of 1901, making his Football League debut against Bury that September. After two seasons, and 59 appearances for The Potters, he moved to Southern League Plymouth Argyle in the 1903 close season and was a key member of Argyle’s first professional side.

The first choice left back for the next three years at Home Park, he scored once in 143 appearances for Argyle, his only career goal coming in a 2-0 home win over Luton Town in April 1906. Clark also captained the side to great acclaim and was described as giving ‘Herculean effort’. On leaving Home Park he joined Leeds City in May 1906 ‘for a substantial fee’ and played a single season comprising 24 appearances during 1906-07. He also went on to play for East Fife in 1907 before returning to the Southern League with Brentford the same year making 23 appearances during 1907-08, and he subsequently joined Southend United in 1908 where he finished his career.
