Waunllwyd, Ebbw Vale, Gwent born outside left Willie Evans had played for Tottenham Juniors in 1927, and “nursery” clubs Barnet in 1928 and Hayward Sports in 1929, and had spent time on the books at Cardiff City during 1930-31 without appearing for their first team, but joined Second Division Tottenham Hotspur in May 1931, making his Football League debut for Spurs against Swansea Town in November 1931, scoring twice in a 6-2 victory at White Hart Lane.

He was an ever present in the Spurs team that won promotion as Second Division runners up in the 1932-33 season and scored an exceptional 28 goals for them that term, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Chesterfield in November 1932, finishing as their second top goalscorer behind George Hunt. He scored a further 28 League goals over their next two seasons in the First Division which ended in their relegation in 1935, a season in which he was Tottenham’s top goalscorer with 14 strikes.

Evans won 6 caps for Wales, making his debut alongside Spurs teammate Eugene O’Callaghan in the 4-1 win over Ireland at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham in December 1932 that sealed their British Championship success and scoring his only international goal against Scotland the following October as Wales retained the Championship. His final cap came against the same opponents in a 3-2 defeat at Celtic Park, Belfast, in March 1936.

He played his last game for Tottenham in November 1936 suffering a knee injury that effectively ended his career, and although he joined Fulham in 1937 after 88 goals in 195 games for Tottenham, at Craven Cottage he never made the Fulham first eleven, retiring in 1938.
