Description

Saltcoats, Ayrshire born left half Jimmy Galt started his football career with Stevenston in 1903 and played for junior clubs Ardrossan Winton Rovers in 1904 and Ardeer Thistle in 1905 before signing for Glasgow Rangers, for whom he made his Scottish League debut at Port Glasgow Athletic in August 1906. Galt played for Rangers for eight years between 1906 and 1914, making 206 appearances and scoring five goals for the club. During his time at Ibrox he won three Scottish League Championships, two Glasgow Cups and three Charity Cups. He also won the Scottish National Exhibition Tournament in 1908.

Galt won his two international caps for Scotland in March 1908. His debut was in a 2-1 victory over Wales at Dens Park, Dundee on 7th March. He then scored on his second appearance, against Ireland a week later in a 5-0 victory at Dalymount Park, Dublin. Galt also played and scored in one unofficial wartime international, against England on 13th May 1916. He also twice represented The Scottish League, in October 1911 against The Southern League and in February 1912 against The Football League.

Galt swapped Glasgow for Merseyside in 1914 and joined Everton, making his Football League debut at Tottenham Hotspur that September. He made thirty-six appearances for the Toffees and scored four goals but despite captaining them to the 1914-15 League Championship, he left to join Third Lanark in the 1915 close season as peacetime football in England was suspended due to the advent of the First World War.

Galt served with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War as a Second Lieutenant and was wounded in action, suffering severe shell shock. After the War he had brief spells with Partick Thistle and Alloa Athletic before his retirement. Galt was also an accomplished golfer: he battled for the ‘Scottish Professional Footballers Golf Championship’ with Jimmy Lawson of Dundee who later switched sports to turn professional in the United States.
