Description

Tow Law, County Durham born right back Bert Hobson started his football career playing for his hometown club, Tow Law Town, in 1908, moving to Stanley United and Crook Town in successive years before signing for First Division Sunderland in 1912, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in March 1913. He soon established himself as a first team regular in place of Charlie Gladwin from October 1913, but the onset of the First World War then forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, interrupting his career.

He returned to Roker Park after the War, missing only two matches in their opening peacetime campaign of 1919-20,  and he had made 172 appearances by the time he left in 1922 to join Rochdale, for whom he didn’t make a first team appearance. This move away from the North East proved brief, he returned to non league club West Stanley the same year moving to Jarrow the next year.

A return to the Football League with Darlington came in 1925, he helped them to the Third Division (North) Championship although his 3 appearances were not enough for a medal, and the following season played twice in The Second Division. He then returned to Jarrow in 1926, playing finally for Spennymoor United the following year, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
