Description

Inverness born right half back Roddie McKenzie began his football career with Inverness Thistle in 1919 and played for Inverness Clachnacuddin in 1920 and Inverness Caledonian in 1921 before being signed by First Division Newcastle United for £100 in September 1922, making his Football League debut, and only appearance in his debut season, in a win over Huddersfield Town in April 1923. A fringe player the next season making only four more appearances, he broke into the Newcastle team on a regular basis from December 1924, and missed only four games as Newcastle won the League Championship in 1926-27.

He remained at St James’ Park for 13 years, and played in 9 FA Cup ties during their triumphant 1932 campaign, when they beat Arsenal somewhat controversially 2-1 at Wembley in the 1932 Final. He played his last match of 256 appearances, during which time he scored 7 goals, in a home defeat to Everton on Christmas Day 1933, during what would prove a relegation season for The Magpies, and although he stayed a further season at St James’ Park in the Second Division, he didn’t make any further first team appearances before he joined Gateshead in August 1935. He scored once in 17 appearances for Gateshead and had a brief spell at Reading in 1937 without making a first team appearance before his retirement from playing.
