Description

Whittle-le-Woods, Chorley, Lancashire born goalkeeper Willie McIver started his football career with Whittle-le-Woods in 1897 and joined Second Division club Darwen in the summer of 1898, making his Football League debut at Lincoln City the same September. Darren lost their League status at the season end, McIver having made 23 appearances, and in 1901 he joined Blackburn Rovers, making his debut in the top flight at Stoke that October. He stayed at Ewood Park until 1908, when after 132 appearances he joined Southern League club Brentford, where he made 42 appearances, scoring twice (both penalties, assumedly) in 1908-09.

He moved on to North Eastern League club Hartlepools United the next summer, making 66 appearances over the following two seasons, before returning to Football League action with Second Division club Stockport County in 1911. He made 74 appearances for The Hatters over the next two seasons, before re-joining Darwen in 1913. A move to neighbours Nelson followed in 1914 but soon the First World War all but ended his career. He played 3 times for Tottenham Hotspur as a wartime guest during 1918-19. After the War he played for non league Blackburn Trinity in 1919 before retirement.
