Description

Preston born wing half Billy Mercer joined First Division hometown club Preston North End in 1919 making his Football League debut on Boxing Day that year against Bolton Wanderers, one of only two appearances he made in his debut season before establishing himself as a regular in the side from November 1920. He was part of Preston’s FA Cup semi-final team of April 1921 which lost 2-1 to eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur at Hillborough, however he was not picked in the eleven that made the FA Cup Final a year later losing to Huddersfield Town. He played his last game of 121 appearances in November 1924 in a season that saw Preston relegated before being transferred to Blackpool in the 1925 close season. However he only played once for Blackpool against Southampton towards the end of August 1925 before joining non league Lancaster Town in 1926, subsequently playing for Midland League Boston Town in 1927.

NB In the photograph Mercer looks on as Tommy Hamilton attempts to block a cross in an unidentified match.
