Ilkeston, Derbyshire born wing half William Morton played junior football before the First World War for West Hallam in 1913 and Ilkeston St John’s in 1914, and after the War he joined Ilkeston United in 1919. From there he signed for First Division club Derby County, making his Football League debut at Arsenal in October 1920. Morton scored once, in a 2-1 defeat at Oldham Athletic in February 1921, in 23 appearances during 1920-21 as Derby were relegated, and he only made 2 more appearances in August 1921 before his career (for whatever reason, possibly through injury) finished.
