Description

Sunderland, County Durham born full back (he played both sides) Fred Robson started his football career with Ryhope Villa in 1912 before joining Southern League club Southend United in 1913, playing for The Shrimpers before the onset of the First World War before forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, and during the War he served with The 17th (Service) Battalion of The Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment), better known as The Footballers’ Battalion.

After the end of the conflict in July 1919 Robson joined Southern League club Swansea Town and when they joined the newly formed Third Division in 1920 he made his Football League debut in Swansea’s inaugural League fixture at Portsmouth in August 1920, making 85 appearances over the next two seasons at The Vetch Field, when he missed only one match for The Swans in 1921-22, before returning to the North East to join non league Easington Colliery Welfare in 1922.

He returned to Football League action with Durham City in August 1923, scoring 5 goals in 82 appearances, 4 of which were penalties, in a two season spell in Durham, where again he only missed one match in their 1923-24 campaign, before a move to Hartlepools United in May 1925. He played 15 times for ‘Pools in the first half of their 1925-26 campaign before returning to Durham City in 1926, however he failed to get into their first team and retired from professional football in 1927.
