Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire born inside forward Alec Smith began his football career with Old Kilpatrick in 1893 and joined Scottish League St Mirren in 1894 before moving to England to join Second Division Lincoln City in June 1895 after a single goal in 7 appearances for The Saints. He made his Football League debut at Grimsby Town that September, scoring 10 goals in his debut season but returned to Scotland to join Third Lanark in 1897 after 12 goals in 52 appearances for The Imps. He returned to England to join Southern League Swindon Town in 1898, where he converted to the half back line and scored once in 54 appearances across two seasons in Wiltshire. In 1900 he returned to Third Lanark where he finished his senior career.
