Gingling Gate, Jarrow, County Durham born right back Jimmy Spoors began his football career with hometown club Jarrow in 1907 before being signed by First Division club Sheffield Wednesday in 1908, making his Football League debut against Middlesbrough the same November. He established himself from the start of the 1909-10 season, when he was an ever present in The Owls’ line up, and he continued to be a virtual ever present for them until the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War in May 1915.
Spoors served with the 4th Depot, 302nd Battery Royal Garrison Artillery in France and Italy during the First World War, he was a qualified mechanic. He also represented The Army at football when in service, and guested for Rotherham County. After the War he resumed with Sheffield Wednesday and made a further 18 first team appearances during Wednesday’s relegation season, before joining Second Division club Barnsley in the 1920 close season after 5 goals in 270 appearances for The Owls.
At Barnsley he also played at centre forward in the final two months of their 1920-21 campaign and scored 10 goals including a hat-trick in a 3-1 away win at Birmingham in March 1921, but he lost his place in the summer of 1921 and only played once more for the club in January 1922 before joining non league Worksop Town later that year having scored 11 goals in 25 appearances for The Tykes.
He married the daughter of former England and Sheffield Wednesday footballer Jack Hudson.
