Marlpool, Derbyshire born inside forward George Robinson began his football career with Ilkeston Rangers in 1925 and played for Ilkeston United in 1926, from where he was signed by First Division Sunderland in April 1927, making his Football League debut at Middlesbrough in May 1928. He scored 6 times in 24 League appearances as Sunderland finished fourth in the League the following season, but he returned to the fringes of the first team, not making a single appearance during 1929-30 and only a handful more in 1930-31 before a move to Charlton Athletic in June 1931 after 8 goals in 32 appearances for The Wearsiders.

His initial spell at The Valley lasted two seasons, spanning 5 goals in 42 appearances, and ended with Charlton’s relegation in 1933, when he joined non league Burton Town, but he returned to Charlton in August 1934 and scored 12 goals as an ever present as they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1934-35. He then proceeded to score another 11 goals as they won back to back promotions finishing 1935-36 as Second Division runners up, and he missed only one game as they nearly completed an amazing treble, finishing as runners up in the League Championship 3 points shy of Manchester City, still Charlton’s highest ever League position.

Robinson then suffered a six year interruption to his career due to the Second World War, but after the War, already aged 38, he returned to The Valley and made another dozen League and Cup appearances, although he didn’t make the team for either of Charlton’s 1946 or 1947 FA Cup Final appearances (albeit playing twice in the ’46 campaign and three ties in the ’47 success), before retiring in the summer of 1947 after 45 goals in 256 appearances over 16 years with the club.
