Sutton-in-Ashfield born full back Frank Marriott joined First Division Notts County from Sutton Junction in 1919, making his debut at Sheffield Wednesday in September 1919. He soon established himself as a first team regular and although Notts County were relegated to the Second Division in his first season, he was part of their team that reached the 1922 FA Cup semi final, when they lost 2-0 to eventual winners Huddersfield Town at Turf Moor. That season he also scored his only League goal, a penalty in a 4-1 victory over Leeds United in December 1921. He lost his place in 1922-23 making only 12 appearances, and in the summer of 1923 moved to Swansea Town after 112 games for Notts County, however he failed to make the Swansea first team and a year later joined Lincoln City. Things were little better for him at Sincil Bank, he only made 4 appearances during the 1924-25 season before joining non league Grantham in 1925.
NB This photograph was taken on 7th February 1920 v Bradford Park Avenue at Meadow Lane, Notts lost the match 2-0. Jack Foster joined Luton Town at the end of the 1919-20 season, which confirms that the 1920-21 label at the bottom of the image is incorrect. The three players standing “behind” were not part of the line up and have been “doctored” into the image.
