Westhoughton, Lancashire born winger Tom Woodward played junior football for White Horse Temperance in 1934 before joining First Division Bolton Wanderers in January 1935, making his Football League debut against Stoke City in February 1936. He came into the team on a more regular basis from September 1938, making 26 appearances, however the Second World War denied him of a considerable part of his career.
After the War he returned to Burnden Park, and was part of their 1946 FA Cup semi final team that lost 2-0 to Charlton Athletic at Villa Park. He became a regular in the first three post war League seasons, and by the time he joined Middlesbrough in October 1949 he had scored 19 goals in 169 appearances for The Trotters. He stayed less than two years on Teeside, scoring 6 goals in 19 appearances, before going on to finish his career with a return to Lancashire when he joined Wigan Athletic in 1951.
