Kilmarnock born winger Robert Tannahill began his football career with hometown club Kilmarnock in 1889 before coming to England at the start of 1893, initially trialling with Blackburn Rovers in January before joining Bolton Wanderers a month later. He made his Football League debut at Burnley on February 11th, but it was his only appearance of the season, it wasn’t until October 1893 that he broke into the Bolton first team on a regular basis. The season saw Bolton reach the FA Cup Final and Tannahill played in a 4-1 defeat to Notts County at Goodison Park.
Tannahill lost his place in 1896 and after 2 further appearances in the spring of 1897 he joined Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in the close season after 11 goals in 80 appearances for The Trotters. His single season at Tottenham saw him score twice in 13 appearances, before he joined Millwall Athletic in 1898, again for a single season. He returned to Football League action with Second Division Chesterfield Town, joining them in August 1899 for their first season in League football, but he scored twice in only 5 appearances for The Spireites before returning to The Southern League with Fulham in 1901. He joined Grays United in 1904 for what turned out to be their last season in The Southern League before finally joining Oldham Athletic in 1905, where he finished his playing career.
