Adlington, Lancashire born full back Jack Slater, who mainly played left back but could operate on both sides, began his football career with hometown junior club Adlington in 1906 before joining First Division Bolton Wanderers, for whom he made his Football League debut at Everton in March 1907. He broke into the team on a regular basis in October 1907 and had two seasons as one of Bolton’s first choice backs, but lost his place in January 1910, spending the next 3 seasons as a fringe player at Burnden Park. He played 31 times in The Trotters’ 1908-09 Second Division Championship success, and by the time he joined South Liverpool in 1914 he had made 99 appearances for Bolton Wanderers.
