Newhall, Derbyshire born full back Fred “Sparrow” Shreeve began his football career with Newhall Swifts in 1902, playing for Stanton in 1903, for Newhall Swifts again in 1904 and for Gresley Rovers later the same year before joining Second Division Burton United in May 1905, making his Football League debut at Blackpool that September. He made 35 appearances during a single season at Peel Croft, before joining Southern League Millwall in the 1906 close season. He spent two seasons with Millwall followed before he signed for West Ham United in the summer of 1908. He scored 4 goals in 75 appearances for The Hammers before joining Midland League Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 1911. After leaving Doncaster Rovers he had spells with Bentley Colliery and Methley Perseverance from 1919 until 1920 when he retired from the game, already in his late 30’s.
He was the father of Jack Shreeve who played for Charlton Athletic both sides of the War, featuring in the 1946 and 1947 FA Cup Finals, winning the latter as they beat Burnley 1-0 in extra time.
