Hanley, Staffordshire born full back George Shenton began his football career playing for Downings Tileries in 1925, and played for Naybro Stone in 1926 and Blythe Bridge in 1927. He joined Second Division Port Vale as an amateur in June 1927 and turned professional in August 1928 and made his Football League debut at Grimsby Town the same September. The Valiants suffered relegation that season, Shenton making 10 appearances, but he established himself in the first team from 1929 as Port Vale won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1929-30 as they won promotion at the first time of asking. He remained a regular in the first team until 1933, thereafter he was increasingly a fringe player at The Old Recreation Ground. He was awarded a benefit match was held against rivals Stoke City on 30th September 1935, Vale lost the game 6-2. When The Valiants again suffered relegation in 1936 he was released after making 194 appearances for the club. He joined non league Shelton Iron & Steel that summer.
