Kirkdale, Liverpool born full back Hugh Slavin began his football career on Merseyside playing with Birkenhead in 1903 before joining First Division Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he made his Football League debut against Manchester City in November 1904. Always a fringe player during his time at Hillsborough, he did play in five FA Cup ties in his debut season ending with the FA Cup semi final, in which Wednesday were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United at Hyde Road, Manchester City’s then ground. Slavin made 18 of his 55 appearances in 1904-05, and also featured twice in the FA Cup run that saw Wednesday win the 1907 Final. He played his final match in September 1909 at Tottenham Hotspur. His career thereafter is uncertain.
