Description

Slamannan, Stirlingshire born centre forward Andrew Smith began his football career with Vale of Carron in 1895 and joined Scottish League East Stirlingshire in 1896 before heading to England in May 1897 to join First Division Stoke. However he failed to make the breakthrough at The Potters and later the same year returned to Scotland to join Stenhousemuir, returning to East Stirlingshire in 1898 and playing for Clackmannan in 1899.

In September 1900 he returned to England joining First Division West Bromwich Albion, making his Football League debut at Blackburn Rovers the same October, scoring in a 1-1 draw. However his impact was limited and even with Albion’s relegation at the end of the season he managed only 13 games in 1901-02, scoring 6 goals as West Brom won the Second Division Championship to make an immediate return to the top flight. In 1903, after only two further appearances for the Baggies, he joined Southern League Bristol Rovers having scored 8 goals in 25 appearances, and he was part of the team that won the Southern League Championship for Rovers in 1904-05.

Nonetheless after two seasons he joined Millwall Athletic in 1905, spending a season with The Lions before a move to Swindon Town. He netted 11 goals in 29 appearances for Swindon during a single season in Wiltshire before a brief move back to London to join Leyton in 1907, returning to join Bristol Rovers later the same year. In 1908 he joined Welsh club Treharris, before a third spell at East Stirlingshire in 1909, and a spell with Vale of Leven later that year. He then finished his career in non league football, joining Wednesbury Old Athletic in 1910 and joining Brierley Hill Alliance in 1912.
