Description

Barnsley, Yorkshire born winger John Smith started his football career with Wombwell in 1921 and spent 1922-23 on the books of First Division Huddersfield Town without making their first eleven. In the 1923 close season he joined Third Division (South) Reading, making his Football League debut at Watford in August 1923, soon establishing himself as a key player in the Reading line up. Reading recorded a modest 18th placed finish in 1923-24 but improved somewhat in 1924-25, before, under Arthur Chadwick, they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1925-26. Smith had scored 14 goals in the campaign including 12 League goals in 36 appearances when he was (seemingly badly) injured, playing his final game on April 3rd 1926 in a 0-0 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. He never played again. The exact reason for his sudden departure from professional football is uncertain. He scored 21 goals in 111 appearances for Reading in total during his three seasons at Elm Park.
