Description

Dalziel, Motherwell, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper George Sommerville began his football career with Holytown Violet in 1919 and played for Strathclyde in 1920 before joining Hamilton Academical in 1921, where he established a significant reputation and made 138 appearances for Accies before being transferred to First Division club Burnley in 1926.

Described at the time as “a stylish, alert keeper, particularly safe in dealing with low shots…. One of the finest of our younger custodians”, he made his Football League debut against Cardiff City in August 1926, allowing previous long term goalkeeping incumbent Jerry Dawson only one appearance in his debut season, although the following season he lost his place in November 1927 to Billy Down and made only 6 appearances in 1928-29 before regaining the gloves in 1929-30. After Burnley were relegated at the end of the season, he stayed a further two seasons at Turf Moor playing in the Second Division before joining Bristol City in the summer of 1932 after 124 appearances for The Clarets.

He had two seasons at Ashton Gate but fell out of favour in the autumn of 1933 and joined non league Burton Town, the forerunner of Burton Albion, in 1934 after 34 appearances for The Robins. He subsequently returned to the West Country, joining Yeovil & Petters United in 1935, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
