Birkenhead, Cheshire born inside left Ben Cross joined First Division club Burnley from Runcorn, who he’d joined after the First World War, making his Football League debut against Huddersfield Town in September 1920. He had played for Liverpool in wartime league football, and in his first season for Burnley scored 15 goals in 40 matches, only behind Joe Anderson and Bob Kelly, as Burnley stormed to the League Championship. It would be his best season return in eight seasons with The Clarets. At the end of the season he was a member of Burnley’s team that lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Charity Shield.
An ever present in their 1922-23 campaign, his 10 goal return included a hat-trick in a win over Nottingham Forest in November 1922. He also played in Burnley’s 1924 FA Cup semi final team that lost to Aston Villa at Bramall Lane. He played 255 games for Burnley until May 1928, scoring 6o goals, before retiring from professional football.
NB in the image he stands on the left alongside Burnley team mate Walter Weaver.
