Description

Dundee born left back Archie Taylor played forĀ East Craigie in 1903 before being signed by Second Division Bolton Wanderers in 1904, making his Football League debut at Glossop that October. However it proved to be only one of six appearances he would make for The Trotters during their promotion season, as they finished Second Division runners up, before he joined Southern League Champions Bristol Rovers in 1905. He had a single season at Eastville before joining Brentford in 1906, where he made 28 appearances before a move to West Ham United in the 1907 close season.

He had two seasons with The Irons, making 67 appearances before returning to Scotland to join Dundee in March 1909, before joining Falkirk later in 1909 at a time when they were a force in the Scottish game. He returned to England in the close season of 1910 to join new Football League entrant Huddersfield Town, playing in their inaugural League match, a 1-0 win away at Bradford Park Avenue in September 1910, and making 34 appearances for The Terriers. He then moved the relatively short distance to Barnsley and became their club captain for the 1911-12 season, a season which ended with their dramatic 1912 FA Cup Final triumph in a replay against West Bromwich Albion with Harry Tufnell’s goal deep into extra time settling the replay at Bramall Lane after the Final at The Crystal Palace had ended in a 0-0 draw. The Manchester Guardian, when reporting on the first match noted that Taylor kept Albion winger Claude Jephcott in check. In the replay his play was again praised.

He played a further season for Barnsley and after 72 appearances for The Tykes he was transferred to Midland League York City in 1913, where he later finished his career.
