Alnwick, Northumberland born winger John Thompson began his football career with Alnwick Town in 1905 and played for North Shields Athletic in 1906 before being signed by First Division Sunderland, for whom he made his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day 1907, scoring twice in a 3-2 victory. He retained his place in the team until April, scoring 6 goals in 16 appearances but despite being a regular goalscorer when on the pitch and a hat-trick against Aston Villa in a 4-3 win at Roker Park in January 1909 he found himself on the fringes of the first team for the next two seasons, scoring 15 goals in 34 appearances before joining Preston North End in the summer of 1910.
He was a regular in the first team at Deepdale over the next two seasons, but his career stopped suddenly at the beginning of March 1912, indicating that he probably suffered a career ending injury, and he never played again having scored 9 goals in 61 appearances for The Lilywhites.
