Winsford, Cheshire born wing half Jack Sankey began his football career with Moulton Wanderers in 1928 and played for Winsford United in 1929 before joining Second Division West Bromwich Albion in November 1930. He eventually made his first team debut in an FA Cup tie at Chelsea in January 1934, his Football League debut coming a week later against Blackburn Rovers in a First Division match (Albion having been promoted in 1931). He immediately established himself as a regular in The Baggies’ first eleven, although he wasn’t selected for their 1935 FA Cup Final appearance at Wembley, when they lost 4-2 to Sheffield Wednesday.
He was part of Albion’s 1937 FA Cup semi final team that lost to Preston North End at Highbury, and he continued to play for Albion until peacetime football was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, by when he had scored 5 goals in 160 appearances. After the conflict he joined Northampton Town in October 1945, playing in their 1945-46 FA Cup campaign and for the first two post war League seasons, making 51 appearances for The Cobblers before he joined Hereford United in 1948.
