Chirk, Denbighshire born right half Robert Davies began his football career with Cammell Laird in 1909 and played for Stafford Rangers in 1910, joining Southern League Watford as an amateur in September 1910 where he made his debut in a home defeat to Coventry City that November. He won a Wales amateur international cap in a defeat to England at The Recreation Ground, Newtown in February 1911.
Soon after he turned professional and he was included in the full international squad to play England shortly after but eventually was a reserve on stand-by and didn’t ever play for Wales. After 17 appearances for The Hornets he was signed by First Division Manchester City in August 1911, making his Football League debut in the derby match against Manchester United the following month. But he found opportunities limited at Hyde Road and after only 6 appearances for The Citizens he joined Southern League Pontypridd on a free transfer in June 1912.
