Manchester born left back Eric Westwood began his football career with Fairfield in 1934 and played for Stretford Rovers in 1935 before spending 1936-37 as an amateur on the books of Manchester United. He joined Manchester City in November 1937, making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in November 1938, by when they had been relegated to the Second Division. He immediately became a first team regular, making 35 appearances before peacetime football was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War, which significantly interrupted his career.
During the War Westwood guested for Chelsea, and played for them in the 1945 War Cup Final when they lost to Bolton Wanderers. After the War he returned to Maine Road and won the Second Division Championship with City in 1946-47, then being an ever present for City in their first two seasons back in the top flight. Although they were relegated in 1950, he was again part of the team that immediately regained top flight status as Second Division runners up in 1950-51. He continued to miss very few games until their return to the First Division later in 1951, and spent his last two seasons at City in and out of the team, eventually  leaving Manchester City in May 1953 having scored 5 goals in 263 appearances. Westwood played two seasons of non league football with Altrincham before his retirement in 1955.
