Wylam, Northumberland born goalkeeper George Wilkinson was educated at Shrewsbury School and won a Blue at Oxford University in three consecutive years between 1900 and 1902. He subsequently played for The Corinthians for several seasons, appearing in three Sheriff of London Charity Shield matches.
He played in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in March 1901 at The Crystal Palace, in the 5-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in March 1902, and in the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at White Hart Lane in February 1903, although Tom Rowlandson was their goalkeeper between 1904 and 1907 for the Charity Shield matches.
He also played cricket for his college at Oxford University and for Northumberland.
During the First World War he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers and rose to the rank of Major, winning the Military Cross in May 1916. He was wounded in action while fighting with The Machine Gun Corps in 1917.
