Ventnor, Isle of Wight born inside forward George Williams began his football career with Pear Tree Congregationals prior to the First World War and during the War he served with the Hampshire regiment in the 2nd and 4th Battalions. Williams played regularly for the 4th Hampshire Regiment in Persia and had such a good reputation that Southampton signed him in 1919 as an amateur, where he featured in their South Eastern League team, signing as a professional in October 1920. He made his Football League debut on 6th September 1920 at Swindon Town, Williams scored although the match ended in a 3-2 defeat.
Williams made a second appearance in their Third Division (South) side in a 2-0 win against Portsmouth five days later, but was released at the end of the season and signed for Exeter City in June 1921. He made his debut for the Grecians against Portsmouth at St James’ Park in September of that year, scoring his only goal in a 4-1 win over Southend United two weeks later.
After one season with Exeter, in which he made eleven appearances, in September 1922 Williams returned to Hampshire where he played Hampshire League football with Netley Sports and joined Cowes in the close season of 1925, before finishing his football career at Salisbury City, joining them in 1926.
