Description

Choppington, Northumberland born centre half Edward Stanley “Stan” Dixon started his football career in 1912 with junior club Barrington Albion, from where he joined First Division Newcastle United for £5 in February 1914, making his Football League debut against Liverpool that April, and playing once more during 1914-15 for The Toon before the advent of the First World War. In April 1915, with the First World War underway, Dixon enlisted in the Tyne Electrical Engineers. He had risen to the rank of acting corporal by July 1917 and spent the War on anti-aircraft duty in Britain.

On the resumption of peacetime football he was back at St James’ Park in 1919, scoring 6 goals in 23 appearances during 1919-20, but he spent a further three seasons on the fringes of their first eleven before joining Blackburn Rovers for £1,100 in March 1923 after 10 goals in 53 appearances. After losing his place in the autumn of 1923, at Ewood Park he was also a fringe player, and he moved to Hull City in May 1926 after 3 goals in 31 appearances. At Hull he more than doubled his career appearances in just over three years, scoring 3 goals in 107 games before joining non league East Riding Amateurs in 1930, later playing for Choppington Rovers in 1931.
