Description

Lochgelly, Fife born inside left David Wilson began his football career with Lochgelly Rangers in 1900 and played for Buckhaven United in 1901 before re-joining Lochgelly Rangers the same year, from where he signed for Second Division club Gainsborough Trinity in the summer of 1901, making his Football League debut against Lincoln City the same September. He played 16 matches for Trinity without scoring before returning to Scotland to join Cowdenbeath in 1902, joining East Fife in 1903, from where he was bought by Heart of Midlothian towards the end of 1903. He made his Hearts debut in a 2-2 draw against Queen’s Park at Hampden in February 1904 and scored 7 goals in 51 appearances for Hearts, winning the 1906 Scottish Cup with Hearts as they beat Third Lanark 1-0 at Ibrox in the Final.

He joined First Division club Everton in the 1906 close season sold to Everton in a £725 joint deal alongside his brother George at that season’s conclusion, and he made just 5 appearances for The Toffees during 1906-07, but after a brief spell in the Irish League with Distillery, he joined Southern League club Portsmouth in June 1907, scoring once in 8 appearances for Pompey in 1907-08 before retiring from the professional game.

He was the older brother of George Wilson who played with him at Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Hearts and Everton, and who was a Scotland international who mainly played with Newcastle United, where he won the League Championship and the FA Cup.
