Darlington born centre forward Andrew Young began his football career with Blyth Spartans prior to the First World War, and after the War joined First Division Aston Villa, for whom he made his Football League debut against Chelsea on Christmas Day 1919. Two days later he scored his first Villa goals, a brace at Oldham Athletic in a 3-0 victory, however his Aston Villa career never saw him achieve regular first team football and he joined Leslie Knighton’s Arsenal in March 1922 for £2,000 after 11 goals in 26 appearances. It’s probably a mark of his lack of impact that Arsenal in due course converted him from a centre forward into a full back during 1923-24, but he had a limited role in Arsenal’s first eleven and by the time he was released to join Bournemouth in the summer of 1927 he had scored 9 goals in 71 appearances for The Gunners. However he only played twice for The Cherries in September 1927 before joining non league Kidderminster Harriers in 1928.
