Description

Sunderland born wing half Arthur Andrews began his football career with Lambton Star in 1919 before joining North Eastern League Durham City as an amateur in May 1920. When they joined the Football League in 1921 he made his League debut at Rochdale in March 1922, the first of four appearances he made before the season end, scoring once. He turned professional over the summer and after only 9 further appearances, in which he scored a penalty in a 4-1 win over Accrington Stanley that September, he was signed by hometown First Division club Sunderland in November 1922.

He made his debut for Sunderland against Everton in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on 9th December but featured only once more that season as Sunderland finished runners up in the League Championship, however he broke into the first team from September 1923, playing 28 games and helping Sunderland finish third, the first of three third place finishes he experienced during his time at Roker Park, the others coming in 1926 and 1927. He remained a first team regular throughout the 1920’s but eventually lost his place at the beginning of the 1930-31 season, playing only 9 more times that season before joining non league Blyth Spartans in 1931 having scored twice in 245 appearances for The Wearsiders. He subsequently joined Ashington in 1933 and finished his career at Spennymoor United whom he joined later the same year.
