Description

Parkhead, Glasgow born wing half Billy Thomson started his football career with junior club Blantyre Victoria in 1910, before joining Parkhead in 1911. He joined Scottish League Clyde in 1912 from where he moved south of the border to join Second Division Leicester Fosse in 1914, making his Football League debut at Grimsby Town in September 1914. His career was interrupted by the advent of the First World War and he was loaned to Arthurlie in 1915, but returned to Filbert Street after the resolution of the conflict playing a further five seasons for Leicester, all in the Second Division, before he joined Bristol Rovers in the summer of 1924 having scored 3 goals in 209 appearances for The Foxes. He played a single season at Eastville, appearing 25 times, before returning to Scotland in 1925 to join Inverness Citadel.

NB in the photograph Thomson challenges Manchester United’s Ray Bennion for the ball in Leicester City’s match at Old Trafford on 10th November 1923. Manchester United won the match 3-0.
