Grassmoor, Derbyshire born winger Matt Burton began his football career with Grassmoor Athletic prior to the First World War, but after the conflict’s resolution he joined Everton, spending the first half of 1919-20 on The Toffees’ books without making a first team appearance. He joined Second Division Stoke in January 1920 and made his Football League debut at Bury at the end of the following month, playing twice more before the season end. He remained on the fringes during 1920-21, scoring twice in 6 further appearances for The Potters before a move to Wrexham in June 1921.
He played in Wrexham’s inaugural Football League fixture against Hartlepools United in August 1921 and scored their first League goal in a 1-0 win in the return game a week later, the first of a dozen goals Burton scored during the campaign, leaving his as the club’s leading goalscorer. He played one further season for Wrexham before joining New Brighton in July 1923 after 13 goals in 61 appearances for Wrexham. At New Brighton he was on the fringes for two seasons, scoring 6 goals in 16 appearances before joining non league Oswestry Town in 1925, playing later the same year for Rhos Athletic. In 1926 he joined Llandudno before returning to Rhos Athletic in 1927, thereafter playing for Connah’s Quay & Shotton in 1928 and Staveley Town in 1928 before finishing his career with a return to Grassmoor Athletic in 1929.
