Old Hartley, Northumberland born goalkeeper Tony Carr began his football career with Seaton Delaval Villa in 1920 and had an unsuccessful trial with Sunderland in February 1922 before joining Third Division (South) Newport County in May 1922, making his Football League debut against Southend United that August. During his two season stay at Somerton Park he rarely missed a match for The Ironsides, making 84 appearances before he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for £1,200 in May 1924. However he couldn’t find a way past Teddy Davidson and a young Jack Brown, leaving Hillsborough to return to Seaton Delaval Villa in the summer of 1925 without having made a first team appearance for Wednesday.
He was signed by Second Division Preston North End for £500 in October 1926 and immediately established himself as The Lilywhites’ principal glovesman ahead of Jimmy Branston and Norman Wharton, however he lost his place in the team to a young Frank Moss in February 1928, and returned to north east non league football with Craghead United in the summer of 1928, before returning to Football League action with South Shields in July 1929. He made 41 appearances for Shields during their 1929-30 campaign, but once again returned to non league football in the 1930 close season, joining Blyth Spartans. In October 1934 he was persuaded to play for Third Division (North) New Brighton, making 17 appearances for the Wirral club before retiring in 1935.
He played minor counties cricket for County Durham.
