Newarthill, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper James Dempster began his football career with Newarthill Thistle during the First World War, and after the end of the conflict signed for First Division Sunderland, initially as understudy to Tommy Allen and Leslie Scott, making his Football League debut against Blackburn Rovers in April 1920. He played more than half of Sunderland’s games in 1920-21 as they finished twelfth, but lost his place to Scott in September 1921 and subsequently to Bill Harper in early 1922, joining Airdrieonians that summer after 43 appearances for The Wearsiders.
After a season at Broomfield Park he joined St Johnstone, from where he moved to Dundee United in 1926. He made 17 Scottish First Division appearances for the Tannadice club during 1926-27 before joining Bo’Ness in 1927, and after a season with them he moved to Bathgate in 1928 before returning to Bo’Ness in 1929, where he finished his career.
