Description

Blackburn, Lancashire born left back Fred Duckworth played for Blackburn YMCA from 1910 but didn’t start his professional football career until after the First World War, having joined his hometown First Division club, Blackburn Rovers in 1914 without breaking into their first team before hostilities forced the abandonment of peacetime football.

He initially played wartime football for Rovers, evidently with considerable success, while not making his Football League debut until August 1919 against Preston North End. Despite this he had already appeared in England trial matches, representing The North against The South in April 1919, and represented England in two Victory internationals, first in 2-2 draw with Scotland at Goodison Park in April 1919, then the next month in a 4-3 win over Scotland at Hampden Park. He spent two seasons as a regular in the Rovers first eleven, making 63 appearances, but lost his place in April 1921 (probably through injury) and never played senior football again.
