Description

Barrow in Furness, Cumbria born inside and centre forward Doug Macfarlane began his football career with newly formed hometown club Barrow where his goal scoring ability attracted the attention of Second Division Burnley who signed him in the summer of 1903, his Football League debut coming at Chesterfield Town that September. He scored on his home debut in a 2-0 win over Manchester United two days later and became a regular fixture in the Burnley first eleven, missing only five games in his first two seasons for The Clarets. He was the club’s leading goalscorer with 8 and 14 goals respectively during those seasons, and although he only played 20 matches in 1905-06, he remained the club’s leading marksman with 10 goals in the campaign.

Macfarlane signed for Tottenham Hotspur in June 1908 and made his debut in the White Hart Lane’s club first Football League fixture at home versus Wolverhampton Wanderers on 1st September 1908. The forward made a total of 21 appearances and scored twice for The Lilywhites during a two season spell, converting to the half back line in his second season where he featured in only 5 matches at right half, before re-joining Barrow in 1910, where he played until his eventual retirement.
