West Cornforth, County Durham born inside right Charlie Cullum began his football career with Cornforth United in 1913 and joined Durham City in 1914 prior to the First World War. After the War he joined Southern League Norwich City in 1919 and did well enough to earn a move to First Division Derby County, however he didn’t break into their first eleven and returned to north east junior league football with West Stanley in 1920. In July 1921 he returned to the Football League joining Tranmere Rovers, but again didn’t manage to make the breakthrough into their first team.
In May 1922 he joined Third Division (North) Walsall, and made his Football League debut against Hartlepools United that August, scoring both The Saddlers’ goals in a 2-2 draw. However he only played twice more before coming into the team on Christmas Day, thereafter playing in most of their remaining games as Walsall finished third in the League, Cullum scoring 9 goals in 22 appearances. Despite this healthy return he was not retained and joined Barrow in July 1923, but after a single goal in three appearances in September 1923 he returned to non league football joining Spondon later that year.
