Aston, Birmingham born inside forward Howard Humphries joined First Division Aston Villa from Handsworth Amateurs prior to the First World War making his Football League debut against Notts County in September 1914 and scoring once in 7 appearances that season before the advent of the War forced peacetime football to be suspended. He resumed with Aston Villa after the War but was only a fringe player, making a further 14 appearances over three seasons, scoring once more at Burnley in February 1921 in a match where Burnley scored seven! After this he appeared at left back in three matches in March and made one more appearance at centre forward in April.
After 3 final matches at the start of the 1921-22 season playing at left back for Villa, he joined Southend United late in 1921 but failed to make a first team appearance at The Kursaal and moved to Rotherham County in March 1922, reverting to the forward line. He scored once (in his last match against Fulham in February 1923) in 10 appearances over the next year for The Millers before finishing his professional football career.
