Description

Gillingham born winger Dick Edmed played for Chatham Central in 1919 and Rochester Sports in 1921 before joining hometown professional club Gillingham in August 1923. He made his Football League debut at Exeter City in April 1924 but rarely got into the team until 1925-26, when after a burst of 7 goals he was signed by Liverpool for £1,800 after 27 appearances for The Gills. Edmed was a stylish right-winger and went straight into the first team, missing only four of the 42 First Division games in his debut season. He was one of two ever-presents, the other being Tom Bromilow, the following season and netted 14 times in the League, a high total for a winger, although he had also taken on the role of the club’s penalty-taker by this time, scoring three times from the spot. Fair-haired Edmed was rather short and light in weight, but “speedy, clever and direct.”

He only missed three League games in 1928-29 and added a further 16 goals, a very impressive total considering that Robert Done was now taking the penalties. Although Edmed figured in two-thirds of the club’s League fixtures in 1929-30, a cartilage injury curtailed his availability for the team and he was no longer sure of his place by the end of that season. He made just 12 appearances in his final season before being replaced by Harold Barton, having scored 46 goals in 170 appearances. He joined Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 1931 but scored once in only 5 appearances over the next 2 seasons before finishing his career in 1933.
