Motherwell, Lanarkshire born inside forward Robert Gardiner began his football career during the First World War playing for Blantyre Victoria in 1916, before joining Scottish League hometown club Motherwell in 1917. He had four seasons with The Steelmen, scoring 15 goals in 112 appearances, before a move south to join Third Division (South) Reading in 1921, making his Football League debut against Southampton that November.
He was an ever present in Reading’s 1922-23 campaign and was the club’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals but he was less prolific in the following campaign, having missed the first three months of the season, and he was released in the close season of 1924 after 21 goals in 99 appearances for The Royals. He returned to Scotland and spent a season with Kings Park (later renamed Stirling Albion) in 1924-25, and a further season with East Stirlingshire in 1925-26 before leaving professional football.
