Description

Gorbals, Glasgow born inside right Johnny Crosbie started his football career with Glenbuck Cherrypickers in 1911 playing for Muirkirk Athletic and Saltcoats Victoria in 1912 before joining Scottish League Ayr United in 1913. When the First World War put a temporary halt to his football career, he volunteered for the Lanarkshire Yeomanry, returning to Somerset Park after the conflict. He won the first of his two caps for Scotland in a 1-1 draw against Wales at Ninian Park in February 1920 while still with Ayr United, and was sold to Birmingham in the 1920 close season for £3,700.

He made his Football League debut for then Second Division Birmingham at South Shields in August 1920. He was ever present in his first season and scored 14 goals as Birmingham won the Second Division Championship in 1920-21. He won his second and final cap for Scotland against England in a 1-0 Scottish win at Villa Park in April 1922. Of his 12 seasons at Birmingham, 11 of them were in the First Division and he was a near automatic first choice for The Blues until the autumn of 1931.

He set up Joe Bradford’s goal in their 1931 FA Cup Final defeat to West Bromwich Albion at Wembley and indeed his partnership with Bradford was famous, they had both signed in 1920 and both played more than 400 times for The Blues. Crosbie moved to Chesterfield in the summer of 1932 after 72 goals in 432 appearances for Birmingham, but his spell at Saltergate was brief, he played only 3 matches for The Spireites before joining non league Stourbridge in 1933, already aged 37, before eventually hanging up his boots.

NB in the image Crosbie runs on the left with Stan Davies (centre) and Joe Bradford.
