Description

Born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, centre forward Johnny Hart started his football career with Larkhall Thistle before joining Motherwell in 1918. His initial stay at Fir Park was brief and he didn’t make a first team appearance before he moved onto Glasgow Rangers, where he made a scoring Scottish League debut in a win over Hamilton Academical in March 1918, scoring 5 goals in 6 appearances, before leaving Ibrox in October 1919 for Hamilton Academical.

He went on to play for Albion Rovers and St Johnstone before returing to Motherwell in 1921 where he would make only 24 appearances in a three year spell, scoring 5 goals. Hart joined St Johnstone again before moving onto Dundee United in 1926 where he managed to carve out a regular starting berth over the next four seasons. Although they were relegated in 1926-27, he scored 11 goals during their promotion campaign in 1928-29 and had a further season in the top flight, scoring 28 goals in 131 appearances for The Terrors before joining Ross County as player coach in 1930, returning to Dundee United as trainer in July 1932, a position he held until 1937. He returned to Dundee United as trainer in 1946 and remained until 1953, after which he scouted for the club.
