Preston, Lancashire born inside left John Hosker began his football career with Lancaster Town in 1914 shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, but after the conflict he signed for hometown First Division club Preston North End in 1919, making his Football League debut against Oldham Athletic that September, scoring his first goal in the return match in a defeat at Boundary Park a week later. However he was a fringe player at Deepdale, scoring twice in 12 appearances during the first two peacetime seasons before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1921.
He scored twice in Stanley’s inaugural League fixture, a 6-3 defeat at Rochdale, and scored 12 goals in their maiden League campaign, with 13 goals the following season as Stanley finished fifth and eighth respectively. He remained a regular starter in his third and final season with Accrington, joining non league Morecambe after 31 goals in 109 appearances for Stanley before his eventual retirement.
