Denny, Stirlingshire born right back Adam Black was a Leicester City stalwart who still holds the record, at 528 League appearances, for most League appearances for Leicester City, with whom he spent over 15 years between joining them January 1920 and his retirement in the summer of 1935. Before joining Leicester he had been a decorated soldier during the First World War, winning the Distinguished Conduct Medal while serving with The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, when fighting near Mœuvres on 21st March 1918. The citation for his DCM stated that Black “bombed out a large portion of a trench captured by the enemy in spite of strenuous opposition. His initiative, leadership and personal gallantry were worthy of the highest praise”.
He began his football career with Scottish Central League club Bathgate in 1919 before signing for Second Division Leicester, then still known as Leicester Fosse, the following January, making his Football League debut the same month against Hull City. He became club captain and totalled 557 appearances for The Foxes, and scored 4 times, 3 of which were penalties, the other being a bizarre 60 yarder against Sunderland in a 4-2 win at Filbert Street in April 1933 which he supposedly overhit! He was an ever present in four of the sixteen seasons during which he served the club, being near ever present in a further five.
An ever present in 1922-23 when they finished third, he then won the Second Division Championship with Leicester in 1925, the season in which he scored all three penalties, and was part of their 1928 team that finished third and 1929 team that finished runners up in League Championship, Leicester’s highest ever finish until their extraordinary feats of 2016. Between 1927-28 and 1932-33 he missed only five matches in six seasons. He also played in their 1934 FA Cup semi final when they were beaten by Portsmouth at St Andrews, Birmingham. By the time of his retirement in 1935 he had received two benefits from the club in recognition of his service.
His younger brother John played for several clubs including Sunderland, Nelson, Accrington Stanley, Chesterfield, Luton Town and Bristol Rovers.
NB In the photograph he stands with Leicester team mate Johnny Duncan and the Hull Hospital Cup.
