Sunderland born centre half Tom Loughran’s football career was mainly spent around the North Eastern League, starting with Usworth Colliery in 1921, from where he joined Third Division (North) club Ashington in January 1923, making his Football League debut against Wrexham on the 20th of that month. He played 7 League matches for Ashington through to the beginning of March, but was not retained and joined North Eastern League club Workington in the close season before returning to Usworth Colliery later the same year.
After a spell with Sunderland West End in 1924 he joined Carlisle United in 1925, also still in the North Eastern League and three years short of becoming a Football League club themselves. Loughran played for Spennymoor United in 1926 before a second return to Usworth Colliery a year later, staying there several seasons before finishing his career with St Joseph’s CYMS of Sunderland whom he joined in 1934.
