Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire born centre half Charlie Bannister started his football career with Old Stanley in 1893 before moving to Everton in 1894-95 where he didn’t make the first eleven, returning to junior football with first Beighton West End and then Newtown in 1895. From there he joined Second Division Manchester City in 1896, making his Football League debut against Arsenal that September and scoring twice in 18 appearances during the 1896-97 season. He moved to non league Oldham County before joining Lincoln City in December 1897, enjoying four seasons at Sincil Bank scoring once in 113 appearances.
He joined Southern League Swindon Town first in 1902 scoring 6 goals in 68 appearances before moving to Reading two years later, returning to Swindon in 1906. Bannister captained the Swindon side that lost in the FA Cup semi final to Newcastle at White Hart Lane in 1910, Bannister winning the Southern League Championship with The Robins in 1910-11. He also played in the 1911 FA Charity Shield, where they were beaten by Manchester United at Stamford Bridge that September, before retiring in 1913 after a further 5 goals in 194 appearances for Swindon Town.
